'Ohana is family in Hawaiian - and that is what we consider our dogs - family.
We live in the beautiful Willamette Valley in Oregon, in a small rural community. It is a wonderful location, only a short distance from mountains, lakes, rivers, the ocean and shopping in Salem or Portland. We have four distinct seasons, none of them extreme.
We are a small hobby breeder, doing only an occational breeding. Our interest in the german shepherd dog actually began in childhood with the television star Rin Tin Tin. Who wouldn't want a friend and protector like that?! Then, about 30 years ago, Lani got her first german shepherd. Since that time we've had many of these wonderful dogs and with each new canine family member, have learned so much. Our dogs are not just pets, they are family members, living in the house with kids, cats and adults. They have jobs, such as Search & Rescue and agility. They travel with us, play with us, work with us, protect us and love us.
The german shepherd dog is not necessarily the dog for everyone. They certainly are not "couch potato's", being very active physically and mentally. Left to their own devices they will frequently find/create their own job or way to keep themselves occupied, often in ways that create problems for themselves and their owner. They are, after all, a working breed! Please research the breed throughly before making a decision to bring a german shepherd into your family.
